WANGANUI DEFEATED IN MATCH AT GISBORNE, Per Press Association. GISBORNE, June 10. Nearly 3000 spectators witnessed tb% first interprovincial Rugby match of the season to-dav, when Poverty Bay defeated Wanganui by 10 points to 6. Th© weather conditions and the ground were ideal. Except for intermittent periods of spectacular back and forward play the game was inclined to be slow. Tliough oveiweighting the home pack by over a stone, the visitors were held in the scrummages and line-outs throughout, the Bay backs seeing plenty of the ball, but in the loose the visitors' dashing dribbling rushes and passing bouts gave the hon** backs a hot time defending. . Cox, Murie and Beilis were outstanding in the visitors' pack, while Peina and Cameron played dashingly in the b ? c s®L ? nd , Dar £7 Played a great game at full-back For Poverty Bay, Langlands and Bennett played a brilliant, heady game in the backs, and M. Whaitiri, Woodward, and Morrison were the best forwards. Both sides scored all their points in the first spell. From & Poverty Bay passing rush Bennett stab-punted, and Morrison, following up, dived over. Caulton converted. Offside play by a Bay forward enabled Cameron to kick a great goal for Wanganui. Then the Poverty Bay backs started a passing movement, which ended in Caulton scoring under the post. Caulton also converted. Cox scored for Wanganui after a drubbiing rush. Poverty Bay 10 points. Wanganui 6 points. NORTH V. SOUraT ISLAND ARRANGEMENTS FOR SATURDAY. Th© North-South match, to be played at Athletic Park to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon, is attracting considerable interest, and there is every indication of a very large crowd being present for the occasion. In order to avoid congestion at the gates, intending patrons are advised to purchase ground tickets in town. Tsese tickets are now on sale at various shops. Early arrivals at the Park on Saturday should be provided with a good preliminary to the big match, two local senior teams having been chosen from the A and B grade to engage in a trial. The early game is timed to commence at 1.15 p.m., and the inter-island match at 2.45 p.m. Special train arrangements have been made for country enthusiasts desiring to see the big match. ,
