MERELY A MANOEUVRE
RETIREMENT OF RIFF ARMY INTO WILD AND BARREN COUNTRY ALLIES MAY RE TRAPPED By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received May 24, 7.15 p,m.) PARIS, May 24. The French and Spanish troops in 12 days have advanced 15 to 40 kilo, metres on a front of 50 kilometres, largely by persistent outflanking movements, the Moors never caring to fight. Their tactics indicated that Abd el Krim’s retirement has been arranged, in the hope of inducing the FrancoSpanish forces to extend their already attenuated lines of communication into barren country, which every mile becomes wilder and hotter. Krim hopes finally to crush the Spanish by moans of a desperate sortie. Meanwhile, many tribesmen are submitting. Router’s Telegram. FEZ, May 23. Friendly tribesmen captured Tarquist and Its surrounding positions.
