SOUTH AFRICA’S NEW FLAG
“AFFRONT TO THE BRITISH” INTENSE FEELING SHOWN. Reuter’s Telegram. CAPETOWN, May 23. The agitation against the proposed South African flag is growing. Meetings of protest are being held
throughout the country. The largest took place in Durban, where since the agitation started there has been a great outburst of Union Jacks outside the shops and on motors. Betides this, they are being worn personally. The Durban Town Hall was packed with an attendance inside and outside of 10,000 people. Great intensity of feeling was evident from the speeches and the messages from the mayors of other towns and various patriotic societies. The meeting culminated with the passage of a long resolution protesting against the proposed flag as entirely ignoring the sentiments of. a very large proportion of the white race in South Africa and as an affront to the British section. The “Cape Times” Parliamentary correspondent affirms that tlie Government has decided not to proceed with the Bill this session.
