MINISTERIAL The Prime Minister, the Right Ho». J. G. Coates, went south last night to attend the closing ceremonies of the Dunedin Exhibition. He will return to Wellington about the middle of next week. Mr F. Waite, M.P. for Clutha, 1a visiting Wellington. Mr I. E. Wiren is leaving on a visit to Australia by the Marama, and will be absent for about six months. The Director of Education (Mr J. Caughley) will leave for Brisbane today to attend a conference of directors of education to be held there. Mr F. Tasker, late secretary of the Wellington Bowling Club, left yesterday for Palmerston North, where he intends to reside. Mr Culford Bell, one of the adjudicators of this year’s Christchurch competitions festival, left for the south last night. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch reports the death of Mr Francis John Gow Wilkinson, a wellknown Christchurch business man, while on his way to England. Three months’ leave of absence was yesterday granted to the Rev. H. Van Staveren by the Wellington Hospital Board. He intends leaving in about ten days’ time for, Wbangarei, and will be accompanied by his eldest son. In June Mr Van Staveren will enter on his 50th year of service an minister, and 47th year as a member of ihe Hospital Board. The Rev. D. J. Shaw, of Khandallah, who has accepted a call to the Hastings Presbyterian Church, has resigned his position as a member of the Board of Governors of Scots and Queen Matgaret Colleges, Wellington. At a meeting of the Board of Governors the Rev. Dr. Gibb spoke in appreciative terms of Mr Shaw’s services. In reply, Mr Shaw said he had always taken great interest in the schools, and would maintain that interest although from a distance. Archdeacon W T . J. Simkin, secretary of the Diocese of Waiapu and Archdeacon of Hawke’s Bay, has been appointed secretary of the Auckland Diocese, and will take up his duties in August next. Archdeacon Simkin is a comparatively young man, being born in Rugeley, England, in 1883. He was •educated at St. Oswald’s, Ellesmere, and later at the Lichfield Theological College. He took his licentiateship in theology at Durham and was ordained deacon in 1908 and priest in 1909. After holding curacies in Christchurch, Hampshire, and Stafford, he cam© to New Zealand in 1911 to be vicar of Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. When at Wairo* he was a member of the Hospital , Board and for thre© years its chairman. Sine© 1918 he has been secretary, treasurer, and registrar of the Waiapu Diocese and archdeacon of Hawke’s Bay since 1919
