CENSUS OF MAORIS
THEIR RETURNS PRAISED HIGH INTELLIGENCE SHOWN. The Maoris of the Rotorua district have earned commendation from the Government official .charged with the responsibility of taking there the census of the natives. A paragraph in the officer’s report which the Government Statistician (Mr Malcolm Fraser! furnished to the Minister for Internal Affairs ‘ (the Hon. R. F. Bollard) states:— “An item worthy of note, and one wh : -h has been most favourably coiriyif- -h noon by my sub-enumerators, is (■'■■<> high degree of intelligence and, incid"”■ nllv of education, exhibited by 'f.ie ” : s generally in supplying parti- and filling in their forms: Withe 'Station and with marked nccurac- these forms have been completed.” - In mentioning the matter yesterterday. Mr Bollard remarked that New Zealanders on the whole cared much for the country’s natives, and they would no doubt he highly gratified to learn of the educational advance evident of the Maoris.
