AN ENORMOUS YIELD GUARANTEE MORE THAN DOUBLED. Te~ Prcs» Association. NELSON, April 59. In opening the Nelson Horticul* turnl Society’s chrysanthemum show, Mi* H. Atmore, M.P., who last week rendered valuable service in the interests of Nelson exporters, referred to the position oT the export apple trade. “Last year,” he said, “the Government had given Id per lb guarantee no to 300,000 cases, and this it had been increased at the beginning of the season to 500,000 cases. The yield this year was such an enormous one that it was later found necessary to raise the number on which! guarantee was to be given up to 650,COO cases. Later still the Government was asked to raise it to 750,000 cases, and he felt perfectly certain the request would be granted. The Fort Hobart would load up to 60,000 cases at Nelson, and even more if the depth of water allowed, and when she left New Zealand she woulcl go as the first ship to leave with a; full cargo of apples, carrying probably up to 120,000 cases.
DISAPPOINTING PRICES DUE TO U.S. COMPETITION. Australian and N 7 C*b 1e Association. LONDON, April 28. A special officer sent from Australia House* to report on the marketing of apples at Liverpool, Manchester, and Hull, says that the prices are most disappointing, despite the fact that the quality is almost invariably good, though there are some exceptions. The set-back in prices is attributable partly to the presence of 6tored American apples, and partly to the arsenic scare as to American fruit, from which the public does not distinguish Australia n. The health officers in the three port* aro unanimously of opinion that there is no danger from arsenic on Australian apples.
