WHEAT AND FLOUR
ALLEGED -UMPING
A deputation from the Canterbury A. and P. .'Association and the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce waited on the Minister for Agriculture and the Minister for Customs yesterday morning, seeking to have two recommendations carried into effect (1) That the duty on flour- should ’he increased to above the parity of the duty on wheat; (2) that the Government should put into effect the powers they hold to prevent dumping of flour into New Zealand.
It was represented' to the Minister that Australia was selling flour to New Zealand at £2 a ton less than the price at which they supplied their own local traders. The deputation asked the Government to protect the millers so that they, might pay the growers a satisfactory price and thus encourage the growing of wheat for future seasons. Their great concern was to have sufficient wheat grown in New Zealand to supply the country’s requirements.
One member of the deputation said that New Zealanders were selling their wheat at nearly 2s less than the imported article.
The representations of the deputation are to receive consideration.
