MR HAROLD SLENDER JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR. Australian and N.Z. Ctibia Association. LONDON, April 15. Mr E. Harold Spender is dead, at the age of 62. Although widely known as author and lecturer, the late Mr Spender was first and always a journalist. He entered the profession in 1891, joining the “Pall Mall Gazette.” He yas afterwards on the “Westminster Gazette,” the “Daily Chronicle,” the “Manchester Guardian” and the “Daily News.” He remained with the “News” for 14 years, jjntil 1914. He spent much of his time m war work during 1914-18. Of Mr Spender’s books, some of the best knowrr were his three biographies, of Asqnith, Lloyd George, and General Botha, and he was also (among others) credited with, being the- author of a series of books (beginning with “The Mirrors of Downing Street”), which were published under the pen-name of “The Gentleman With a Duster,” and are still read by thousands in Englishspeaking countrie^. SYDNEY, April 16r Mr Francis Adams Iredale, ex-inter-national cricketer, and, until recently, secretary of the New South Wales Cricket Association, is dead, aged 63 years. , The late Mr Iredale 'was at one time one of the best-known figures in Sydney, where he played for New South Wales from 1888 to 1902. HP visited England in 1896 and 1899 as an Australian representative, and made 12 centuries in all against England, six in the Old Country and nx in the Commonwealth. His highest score in Britain was when he jnado 108 at Old Trafford in 1896, and his highest in Australia 196, against Tasmania, in 1895. Frank Iredale made total of 6980 runs in big matches, of which 807 were 'in Test matches. His total average worked out at 33.7, and his Test match average at 36.6.
