NEW ZEALAND TEAM BEATEN ANDREWS DEFEATS N.S.W. jCHAMPION FRANCE ALSO WINS By Telegraph.—tress Assn. —Copyright. (Received April 9, 8.25 p.m.) ' SYDNEY, April 9. The first serious game in which the New Zealand tennis team has participated took place to-day, when the visitors met a New South Wales .team which, except that* J. 0. Anderson was absent, was the best aavilable. The weather was ideal, there being no wind. The bright sunshine caused little trouble. The New Zealanders, although beaten, gave a very creditable display, especially, Wallace and Smyth, who, in Ahe doubles beat Kalms and Willard, the strongest combination iff New South Wales. In the 'singles France and Andrews gained victories against Cummings and Peach, respectively. Cummings' appeared not to exert himself too much, and France cleverly placed the ball well away from him. . Wallace and Baker provided the best singles exhibition of the day. Baker’s hack-hand play is on the weak side, and Wallace took full advantage of the fact. Baker, however, Is a tall map with a long reach,, and he gained points at the net. SEAY BEATEN BY KALMS
