SUSPECTED MOTOR THIEF EXCITING CHASE IN SYDNEY REFUSES TO SURRENDER By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received March 15, 12.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 14. < The sensational chase of a supposed motor-car thief ended at Richmond today, where the suspect, Desire Lacourt, was shot dead. The police had been hot on his tracks for three days, and on Saturday morning saw him driving a suspected stolen car at Lindfield. They fired several revolver shots as he sped away. He escaped, but it is believed he was wounded, as bloodstains showed along the route he took.. Later in the day they surrounded a house at Balgowlah, but he again escaped by lifting the flooring boards when the officers rushed the doors. Thence he was traced to a hotel in Richmond. The man fled through the back when the police entered the front. He ignored the calls to surrender, and a shot was fired over his head.
A constable thereupon shot him through the head. He was sent to the hospital, and died shortly after.
