The need for the careful consideration of the Coal Commission’s Report was emphasised by the Premier (Mr Baldwin) at a meeting with rejiresentativjs of the Mining Association and tho Miners’ Federation at Downing street. k Mr Baldwin, in a speech, emphasised the seriousness of the responsibility resting on all of them in that connection. Ho had requested members of the Cabinet to study the report with great care during the week. He asked his hearers earnestly to consider the report, and not to be in too much hurry to* jump at conclusions thereon hven a few days of careful consideration and deliberation at. the present time might bo worth a great deni to them later on. Mr Evan "Williams, speaking on behalf of the mine owners, entirely concurred with the Prime Minister’s view He remarked that the mine owners had on their side a very large body of / people, many whose whole 1 means of livelihood in the world might depend on the re3uUs of the discussions. Mr Herbert Smith, president of the Miners’ Federation, remarked* “Our people’s lives depend on this industry as to what is to he done for it more than those of our friend from the money viewpoint.’ ’ They would, he said, give the report as much consideration as possible, hut the question rested between the Premier and the owners largely in regard to what they were going to say about the report nn d 'ig results. He had no atronc opinions yet until he knew what decision they vere going to make. The miners’ delegate conference decided to refer the Coal Commission’s report to the districts and subsequently call >4 further conference.
