TAXI OWNERS’ GRIEVANCE

A MEETING WITH THE PRIME MINISTER A deputation of taxi-owners waited on the Prime Minister yesterday, and asked for the removal of th 6 £l6 10s tax on motors weighing over two tons. They said that companies who were putting cars on the road nowadays evaded the tax by seeing that their cars were less than the weight mentioned, and that thus the Government was losing the taxation from the whole of those people, while, on the other hand, it was penalising returned soldiers and others who had boughs their cars before the tax was decided on. Mr Coates said that a line had to be drawn somewhere. The question 'was not one of taxation, but the idea was to protect the roads. The money from the tax did not go to the Government, but to the local bodies. However, he would look into the question as soon as he could, and see what could be done.
