The “Daily Mail” states that Lupton House, Lord Chuiston’s Devonshire seat, was destroyed by fire at midnight. The only lenants were the caretaker and his wife. The latter ran half a mile to the village, and raised the alarm. Nine brigades vainly fought to suppress the outbreak, and succeeded in rescuing many valuable paintings. This makes the ninlh mansion housefire in 1926. RATES MAY HARDEN! INSURANCE EXPERT'S VIEWS. (Received March 10, 11 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. The extraordinary sequence of fires in country mansions has been a subject of discussion in view of the destruction of Lupton House and the country estate of Lord Churston, together with the valuable family heirlooms. This is the ninth country mansion destroyed in 1926, involving a total damage of £500,000. Insurance experts do not believe the remarkable senes of outbreaks is anything other than a coincidence. Nevertheless, there is a probability that the rates will harden and more severe restrictions will be imposed.
