OLD LADY’S TRAVELS
THIRTEEN WORLD VOYAGES. An old lady has recently died at Exmouth, aged 83. She was Mrs Setton, a great sea rover in her day. Her husband, who died before she did, was master of the Pleiades, a fine schooner of a class we never see now.
The Pleiades is a pretty name for a ship and a gallant little vessel she was She flecked her way in and out of the Eastern seas, leaving a merry wake of foam behind her, went fast asleep in the calms, and then woke and doubled up under the crashing gale, shook herself and came up smiling, and presently came to anchor again in the Sound. Mrs Setton loved her husband, and she loved the sea, and she loved the schooner, and one fine day she said: “I’m coming with you, my dear. Yon really must have someone to mend your socks.” And out the Pleiades sailed again, her topsails winking as much as to say, “We’Ve got a lady on board.” Mrs Setton returned from her first voyage round the world well pleased. Anyone would think that to go round the world once was enough; but not Mrs Setton. She went again. She got into the habit of going round the word, and before her husband died she had been round the world thirteen times.
