EMPRESS THEATRE

DOUBLE FEATURE BILL,

A narrow street, only twenty feet wide, furnishes the baßis for Warner Bros.’ motion picture of the same name, that promises to delight the patrons of the Empress Theatre, beginning to-day. To outward appearances, Simon Haldane, played by Matt Moore, is as unobtrusive and retiring as the .narrow street he lives on, until one stormy night hq finds his bachelor quarters invaded by a nameless girl, who asks for refuge from the inclement weather and the police. Dorothy Devore, vivacious comedy star, characterises the intruding Doris with all the charm of a beautiful and cultured girl in straightened ' circumstances, with the result that Simon Haldane, ip his desire to protect her from those she fears, announces to the world that she is his wife. Many embarrassing situations are cleverly evaded by the quick-thinking Doris, whose mysterious presence introduces the staid bachelor to a new vista of things as they might be, if —- A strong cast supports Dorothy Devore and Matt Moore, and includes players of such merit as David Butler, Gertruds Short, Tempo Pigott, Kate Toncrya, and Madame Sultewan, a lady of colour. Also screening is “The Beggar on Horseback.” starring Edward Horton and Esther Ralston. It is the gayest, funniest story ever seen-—the story of a young composer whose heart is dedicated to a symphony, but who has to write tinpan jaz» jsongs to keep from starving; of two girls, one rich, one poor, both of whom lews him; of a dream he dreams which is the most marvellously fantastic thing of all. There are excellent supporting films, and a specially selected musical programjae by Mr M.< Dixop’s orchestra.
