One of the mo* spectacular and disastrous fires that have occurred in Sydney for many years totally destroyed the store and head offices of Mcllwraith’s grocery establishment at the corner of Pitt and Goulburn streets ; n the city late last night. The damage is estimated at in the vicinity ol £IOO.OOO. Fully fifty thousand spectators gathered to view the spectacle. Dozens ol women who had become wedged in the crowd fainted with the heat. All the inmates of the People’s Palace adjoining were ordered from the building. Many had to bo aroused from sleep and were assisted by the police to take their belongings from the building. Shortly afterwards tons of masonry from a falling wall crashed through tile People’s Palace wrecking part of the roof, and causing an outbreak of fire, which, however, was soon suppressed.
