RED CROSS

The monthly meeting of the Red Crosa (war time) executive was held yesterday afternoon in the rooms, Dixon street. Mr Burnett presided, and then. wero present Mrs Rose, Mr Wright, and Mr Galloway, secretary; Apologies were received from Mr L. Blundell, Miss Lowe, and Mr Rose. The chairman reported that a seven years’ lease with the present tenants of the Red Cross building had been concluded. A letter was read from Dr Colquhoun, in London,, stating the Red Cross nurses in training had both passed their examinations well. They were anxious to visit before leaving England Cadbury’s village at Bburnville, the Trelvan Cripples’ Home in Alton, MacMillan Open Air Nursery School at Deptford, and Juvenile Courts in London, to observe welfare work done. A letter of thanks from Mrs Hertzog for sympathy expressed to her, was read. The committee grunted her leave of absence to visit England. A report fro n Miss Thurston, matron at Pukeo-ra Sanatorium, was read. Fruit cakes, magazines, etc., had been brought by Wnipukurau committee, Otane Red Cross, Takapau, and Porangahnj conmittees, also from Mrs E. Beamish, Mrs Clark and Mrs Lowry. A picnio to Mt. Herbert had been much enjoyed, cars being supplied by the Red Cross committee.

Mr Burnett stated that two' picnics had been given the men at Porirua, and two more were planned before the end of the season. Several ’otters raking for help were received. One who wished to go to the Blue Mountains was referred to the Red Cross in New South Wales. An outfit is to be sent to a man in Hawke's Bay. Correspondence with the Y.M.C.A. on the alteration with regard to the picture lighting necessitated by the change-over at Pukeora was read. It was decided to ask the Health Department to pay half the cost. The rpiestion of duty on tobacco for the soldier patients was discussed, and it was decided to ask the Minister for Customs to .emit this.

Mrs Cook, president of the Auckland W.C.T.U., arrived in Wellington yesterday, and left by the Lyttelton ferry steamer last, night to attend the Dominion convention of the W.C.T.U. in Christchurch. The ‘‘Smith Family” benefit euchre party and dance at the Trentham Tea Kiosk was a big success. The Mayor, in presenting the prizes (donated by Mr Haley, of the Racing Club staff?, thanked the people for their support, and announced that-a concert and also a dance were to be held in aid of. the fund in the east (Upper Hntt) ward of the borough. So great had been the response to -the call for clothing for Mrs Smith and her six children that they found more was available than was needed. It had byen arranged that after Mrs Smith had made her selection, such clothing as remained should be distributed to people who had large families and to whom it would b& most acceptable.—(“Times” correspondent.)
