TIMBER AT AKATARAWA

COUNTY COUNCIL'S ACTION OPPOSES CUTTING RIGHTS. Claiming that the granting of right* to cut timber on the Akatarnwa water reserve would be detrimental to the interests for which the land was purchased, the Hutt County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday decided to protest strongly against the proposal of the Foresty Department to allow certain timber to be felled. Alembers of the council, with practical sawmilling experience, said that they felt that notwithstanding the regulations which the Forestry Department could enforce, such regulations should not be enforced. "The 'whole of thi* watershed will be required as a water supply for the Hutt Valley and the city in a few years." declared Councillor A. Campbell, "and we should emphatically protest against any cutting rights at all being granted." It was decided to ask the other local bodies, which are joint owners of the land, to support the protest against the granting of cutting rights in the reserve.
