FIRE BOARD PROPOSAL

CONSIDERATION DEFERRED . QUESTION OP. BENEFITS. The proposal that a fire hoard should bo established in the city, which is as yeti in the tentative stage, has been deferred until the City Council again meets. The matter was to have been discussed at a special meeting of the council held yesterday afternoon, but on account of the fire brigade committee requiring to make further inquiries this was postponed. The Mayor was not present, and Councillor M. P. Lucki'.i presided. Councillor R.' A. Wright considered that the matter should he pushed forward, because it would be desirable to have it settled before the end of the financial year. If this were not done, the council would lose the benefits of a full year. He understood that a poll of the ratepayers could be taken within one or two weeks, though it might become necessary to compile a new roll. Councillor Luckie said even if this bad to be done, and the change did not cake place till after the commencement of the new financial year, this would not make any difference to the benefits, which would commence immediately the clfange was effected. It _was decided that the matter would be discussed at a later stage. The new heavy traffio by-laws, which were adopted some weeks ago, were confirmed at the special meeting.
