WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION

YESTERDAY’S MEETING PROPOSED CONFERENCE. The first meeting for 1926 of the executive committee of the Wellington War Belief Association took place yesterday. There were present: Messrs !*. O. H. Tripp (chairman), Alex, Macintosh, Geo. Shirtcliffe, and I). McLaren. Apologies were received from Messrs C./M. Luke and A. Veitch for their unavoidable absence. - A letter was received from the Internal Affairs Department, notifying that a conference of patriotic organisations is to be held in March, April, or May, 1926, to consider the introduction of a great measure of uniformity of treatment, T.B. cases being instanced; the assistance of. disabled men and dependents by rich societies when the poor society responsible cannot fully function through lack of funds, or has totally exhausted its financier resources; the amalgamation of societies in contiguous areas, .thus reducing overhead expenses; the transfer of • all existing funds to the N.W.F.C., or, failing this, the transfer of all existing funds to four or six provincial centres, local committees to relieve urgent cases through imprest accounts; whether sums should be set aside for the establishment and endowment of veterans' homes. The canteen and regimental trust funds board and the N.Z.R.S.A. are to be represented. It is expected that the conference will do a great deal of good, and a special executive meeting will take place shortly concerning this conference. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT The finance committee has met twice —one special and one ordinary meeting having taken place—since the last meeting or the executive committee on December 14th, 1925, and in addition to it 6 ordinary function of controlling the financial affairs of the association, has dealt with 21 applications for monetary assistance by way of loans. Of these seven were old ana 14 were new applications. The former were revised m connection with amendments to the original terms of repayment and in other directions, the amount involved being £565 and the unpaid balances .£s2o Ss 4d. The 14 hew applications totalled £ISOO in value. Five were approved, and 9, which disclosed no evidence of war disability, were declined. Tbe income and expenditure for December last was as follow Expenditure, £l2Ol 5s Bd; income (including per contra credit for loans advanced, during the month .£535), .£llO3 15s; excess of expenditure over income (charged to capital account), £97 10s Bd. The total available funds as at December 31st, 1925, werelnvestments, £28,500; current accounts, £834 9s 2d; petty cash, £9O; total, £29,364 9s 2d. Accounts amounting to £257 2s 7d gross were passed for payment.. EMERGENCY COMMITTEES The applications and emergency committee reported that the. applications committee has met on four occasions since December 14th, 1925, and during that period of 27 working days there had been 169 cases under action. Of these 50 were new claims and 119 old cases; whilst there are 69 cases under action, the remainder comprising 100 cases and embodying 110 applications were disposed of. There had been no alteration in the general activities of the committee. Assistance, differing widely in description/ has been given to partially disabled sol-, diers, to others who were discharged fit and subsequently developed a war disability, to the widowed mothers and widows of soldiers, who fell in action &nd in other directions that could not be referred to within the limits of the report.
