FATAL BAPTISMS
TRIAL OF CONGO NATIVES CHIEF SENTENCED TO DEAtfH. (Sydney “Sun" Cable.) * CAPETOWN, January 26., The Chief Tomo, charged with murder in connection*with the Cdngo baptisms, was sentenoed to death. * The trial took place/at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, of 27 natives, members ,of a sect known as “The Watch ; Tower,” who were charged with drowning 22 natives, mostly women, during baptism. The central figure was a native, Tomo Njindera, known in the Congo as “Mwanalesa,” Son of God. The Crown case was that the accused baptised converts by immersion, informing them that anyone not baptised was a wizard or a witch. 'Sometimes they held converts under water till they were drowned. They warned anyone giving information that he would die.
