STAFF PICNICS

INSURANCE COMPANIES EMPLOYEES AT PLAY. The insurance companies held their twenty-first annual picnic at Day’s Bay yesterday. The weather was not ideal, but that did not bother the large crowd of happy folks who were determined to make the most of their day’s outing. The sports programme was got through, the competition being keen for the several events. Mrs Helen White and her orchestra provided excellent music. Luncheon was held in the pavilion, over which Mr W, A. Parton, chairman of the Wellington Underwriters’ Association, presided. A dance was held in the pavilion in the evening. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ DE. j PARTMENT The annual picnic of the National Provident Fund and Friendly Societies Department, together with the superannuation department, was held at Day’s Bay on Thursday, 21st instant. The weather was perfect, and a most enjoyable time was appreciated by all.A lengthy programme of sports was successfully carried out, the results of the various races being as follows: Cadets’ handicap, Furlong 1, Gilligan 2; junior ladies’ handicap, Miss Sawyer 1, Miss Gibb 2'; senior ladies’ handicap, Miss Barnett 1, Miss Sampson 2; men’s handicap, MpGreevy 1, Clark 2; visiting ladies’ race, Miss Jtainforth 1, Miss Tossman 2; whistling race, Miss Scanlon and Clark 1, Miss Rubenstein and Costelloe 2; relay race, Miss Smedley, Bradley, McGreevy, and Parker; ladies’ novelty race, Miss' Scanlon 1, Miss Barnett 2; cigarette race, Miss Vercoe and Leamy; men’s Darwinian race, Leamy 1, Leppien 2; children’s race. Miss Mary O’Gorman 1, Miss Beryl Oakley 2; wheelbarrow race, Miss Barnett and Leppien; ham and eggs face, Miss Janisch and Leppien; married men’s handicap, Bradley 1, Comrie 2; ladies’ swimming handicap, Miss Vercoe 1, Miss Scanlon 2; men’s swimming handicap, McAulay 1, Trounce 2. During the afternoon a tennis tournament was played, and after several close games the winners were Miss Feeney and Costelloe. Mrs O’Gorman presented’ the prizes at the conclusion of afternoon tea, and a fitting close to a very pleasant day was an impromptu dance, held in the pavilion in the evening. OTHER PICNICS WELLINGTON WATERSIDJERS. The Wellington Waterside Workers’ annual picnic took place at yesterday. There was a large attendance, and an enjoyable day resulted for young and old. Games and sports were provided, and there was no lack of competitors. The Harbour Board’s staff picnic, which was also held yesterday, was a marked success. It was held at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt.
