IN THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLD
HOW AIAIDS ARE CHOSEN
Those girls' who secure situation* at Buckingham Palace as maids or general servants are fortunate indeed. Before she is definitely engaged, each girl is thoroughly' trained for her work. Quite often various members ;of the same family, have served, in'.the Royal Household fpr several generations. All purely domestic- ..matters . at Buckingham Palace are under the control of the head housekeeper. It is her business to supervise the staff and to interview: the maids when occasion demands. Between 10 and 11- o’clock each morning is the time set aside for an.v maid to see the housekeeper if she wishes. " *
One girl may want to he out a little later than usual on her next evening off. and she asks that she may: return to the palace at 11- instead of 10., After a few questions as to the reason for staying out later than - usual,. the, request is readily granted in nearly all cases. Now and again a girl may ask for two or three days’ special leave of absence, to visit a sick relative,' for instance.. Here, again, no, difficulties ever arise. Hardly ever does a maid leave the Hoval service exoept oil account of. illness, increasing years, or to get married. Always when a maid leaves the housekeeper says she will see the Queen about it. which, in other words ) means a substantial Royal gift. Those servants who on account of ill-health or age are not able to continue' their duties are the - subject' of special care and interest on the part'of Her Majesty.
