In speaking at the-opening of the Rathbohe Maternity Hospitaly at Waipawa oh Thursday. Dr. yaliiitine, Di-rector-General of (Health',- remarked that New Zealand did not-’ %ant any more hospitals—they were. very well served in this respect—hut .what the country did need was many more maternity institutions, and it was .owing to the generosity of gentlemen like the Ratbbone trustees that they Xrere able to extend these very excellent hospitals. They had now in. the Dominion 2000 qualified midwives, 1129 of whom were actually working and 279 of whom were class B midwives—those who had not completed their training. At one time the number of untrained midwives exceeded the thoroughly trained, but happily the position was reversed to-day. The marriage was celebrated in Melbourne on Wednesday of Doris, younger daughter of Mrs E. Moreland, of Melbourne, to Daniel W. Reese, elder son of Mr and Mrs T. W. Reese, Rossall street, Merivale (Christchurch). Mr Reese is well-known in the cricketing fraternity of Canterbury, as a bowler and a batsman. He was a member of the Boys’ High School first eleven, and he now plays for St. Albans. He has represented Canterbury. He is a nephew of Dan Reese, one of the best allround cricketers New Zealand has-pro-duced. The death occurred on Friday , at Parkvale of Mrs Hickson, a settler; of many years in that locality. , .Mrs Hickson, svho was 74 years of, age, is survived by a family of four sons and four daughters, including Mesdnmes Sullivan (Hawke’s Bay), Fisher (Parkvale). and G- H. Hood (Greytow.n), and Alessrs A. (Australia). H. E. (Manterton), and John (Parkvale). The death Occurred at Northcote cn Saturday of Airs Phoebe Margaret Ralston, aged 78, who had resided in the, district for the past -half-century. Mrs Ralston was hern in Auckland, being the daughter of . the late Mr and Mrs Dennett, old Auckland pioneers. She married the late Air James M. Tunny, Government analyst, and the son and daughter, Mr James Good Tunny and Mrs William Bruce, of Northcote, died some years ago. With the exception of a few years at Tauranga, Mrs Ralston resided in Auckland throughout her life. She is survived by .her second husband, Mr Alex. AI. Ralston,' and two sons, Messrs William Henry Ralston and Gavin Dennett Ralston, of Northcote, and 10 grandchildren.
