AT WORK ALL NIGHT
JEWEL ROBBERS IN LONDON REMARKABLE INSTRUMENT USED PENETRATED MASSIVE SAFE Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 24. The most daring robbery for veam took place at a West End jeweller’s establishment. The robbers used a remarkable instrument, two feet high, woraed by a motor steering wheel, by which a circular hole' ten inches across was out in a massive safe. The tool is now in possession of Scotlatid Yard. It is the first of its kind found by detectives, a similar device having been first heard of in South Africa last year. Three men worked throughout tho night, and were ready to leave when the charwoman arrived. The burglars actually opened the door, saying: “Good morning, come in. W'e have just finished repairing the electric light.” Thereupon they left, taking jewellery, including diamonds of a Value of £IO,OOO. It is surmised that they intended carrying away the instrument, which was mounted on an iron base, hut were unable to do so owing to the charwoman’s arrival. The room was strewn with powder from the fireproof material covering the safe, through which the drill had bored.
