DWELLING GUTTED

OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE CHURCH! WINDOWS DAMAGED. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., January 25. A fire this morning gutted a fiveroomed dwelling in Broad street, next the Methodist Church, owned by P. Cowliohaw. The latter was the sole occupant at the time of the outbreak. He escaped in his night attire through a window. The heat from the conflagration damaged seven large Gothic window panels and several smaller panes in the church windows. The insurance was £SOO on the house and £3OO on the furniture. At 6.30 the brigade was called to business premises in the Square, the White; House, where the outbreak was discovered. The prompt arrival of the brigade saved a severe lose. Only the walls, ceiling, and passage-ways were badly charred, apart from the damage by water.
