INFECTIOUS DISEASES
A DECIDED DECREASE FEWER DIPHTHERIA OASES. The latest figures from the Health Department show an alhround decrease. Diphtheria, especially, is becoming less noticeable. One case of poliomy’itis (infantile paralysis) has been reported this week from the Taranaki and Horowhenua districts. Nelson and Marlborough reported no cases. Following is the bulletin for the week ending September 21st (last week’s ■figures being mentioned in parentheses) Taranaki and Horowhenua districts: Scarlet fever, 2 (1); diphtheria, 4 (5); pneumonia, 3 (4); poliomylitis, 1 (0); puerperal fever, I (0); septic abortion, 2 (0); total, 13. Wairarapa and East Cape districts: Diphtheria, 7 (5); tuberculosis, I (3); enteric fever, 1 (0); total, 9. Central Wellington: Diphtheria, 2 (5) ; scarlet fever, 6 (6); tuberculosis, 2 (0); pneumonia, 3 (0) ; enteric fever, 1 (0) ; puerperal fever, 1 (0); c.s.m., 1 (2): total 16. The total cases reported from tho four centres last week was 47, whereas it is only 38 this week.
