FIREMEN HOLD UP FLEET GUESTS MR WALSH JUBILANT 1 By Telegraph.— Press Assn.— Copyright. MELBOURNE, July 24. When the firemen wete t assured . that Mr Stanley Bruce, the Prime Minister, was not on board the Weerooma, which was about to sail for the Heads to meet the American fleet, they demanded a guarantee of £IOO that the statement was correct, and on one of the guests guaranteeing t]sat amount, the men demanded £4OO, which was refused. The majority of the guests left the vessel. The firemen concerned were promptly dismissed by the owners. ■ ■ The action is regarded as part of a pre-cpnsidered plan, as the men delayed their action till it was time for the steamer to leave. • ■ Referring to the position later, Mr Bruce, who spent the day at his office, said it was the moßt incredibly foolish and stupid thing he had ever heard’of men doing. They had certainly provided the public with a practical example of the working of ‘‘job control” in a 'manner which would bring home the realisation of it to everybody. Mr Tom Walsh, the seamen’s secretary, said it was a matter of great satisfaction to him that seamen of Australia were courageous enough to protest aginst the vindictive insult levelled at the seamen by the Prime Minister.
Mrs Coates, wifo of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, was among the guests aboard the' ship who were robbed of the trip.
