Dr. Earle Page, the Federal Treasurer, has announced the terms for the conversion of 4} per cent, war loans, which fall due in December. The rate of interest is to be 51 per cent., and the loan will be issued at par. The period of the loan will he six, 11, mS 16 years, at the subscriber’s option! though new money will be accepted the treasurer is sanguine that most of the present holders will convert their stock or bonds into the new loan. Mr Justice Branson, in the King's Bench Division, gave a verdict for the ■federal Steam Navigation Company, the defendants, in an action brought by Bradley Sons, Ltd., of Coveht Garden Market, for .£4314, as damages for brown heart appearing in apples shipped by the Northumberland from Hobart in April, 1021. main issue in the case nas plaintin s allegation that the brown heart was due to the bad ventilation of the Northumberland's hold. The defence was that brown heart was due to inherent defects in the apples when shipped. The ravages of the "bunchytop*' disease in the banana plantations in the Tweed River district, previously a large exporting centre, are so disastrous that the local Fruitgrowers* Association, which handled the trade, is no longer required and has disbanded. A movement is afoot in Sydney to reestablish the banana trade with Fir. and a shipping firm has offered to provide suitable steamer accommodation if sufficient inducement is offered. Tho Tweed River district is a small area in the extreme north-east of New South Wales. The total area under bananas in New South Wales in 1922-23 was 33(H) acres, yielding 350,000 bushels, and the nrea in Queensland was 10,800 acres, yielding 1,620,000 bushels.
