TUG AND FLOATING CRANE HARBOUR BOARD'S PURCHASES. Particulars of the tug "Toia" and of the steam crane “Hikitia,” the purchase of which has been decided upon by the Wellington^Harbour Board, were supplied to the board by the general manager . and chief engineer. The tug is expected to sail for New Zealand next month and the crane about August of , next year. • The length of the "Tbia," between perpendiculars, is 135 feet, breadth moulded 29ft, depth 16ft. The gross tonnage is 422 tons and net register tonnage 53-£. The mean draft with 245 tons of coal and 24 tons of water is 13ft 7in. The vessel has a maximum speed of 12.14 knots and an economical speed of 8 knots, at which the coal consumption is 10 tons to 11 tons per day., The vessel is fitted with two Scotch boilers. The salvage pump and gear comprise one lain direct driven steam centrifugal pump to discharge 3500 gallons per minute The discharge from the pump is led to a portable bend fitted for discharging overboard, while in addition a portable discharge .chest i§s to be supplied so that it can be led into ahy ship it is desired to flood. It is fitted with 21in diameter connections, to which fire hoses can be fitted. Provision is also to be made for a steam fire pump capable of discharging 2000 gallons per minute, drawing directly from the sea. A wireless installation with a transmitting range of not less than 200 miles in daylight and a line throwing gun will -complete tho apparatus of the tug. The vessel is expected to sail from the port of Rosyth some time next month. THE “HIKITIA" The dimensions .of the crane steamer "Hikitia" show that the vessel is of an. unusually large. character, with a tremendous capacity for lifting. The vessel, which is at present being built in to the order of the board, is of the twin-screw design, 170 feet in length overall, and 160 feet between perpendiculars. The breadth is 54 feet and the: depth 12 feet, while the draft with 30 tons of coal, 10 tons of water, and 60 tons load on deck, is about 7 feet. It contains four, watertight transverse bulkheads, carried to main deck, making five separate watertight compartments. In addition to two sets of compound surface condensing direct-acting engines, it has one surface condenser common tci both engines, circulating pump, air pump, main and auxiliary feed pumps, bilge and general servico pump. The vessel is fitted with one steam windlass and two Bin x lOin steam working capstans. The maximum working load is 80 tons. The crane hoists 80 tons at 4ft per minute; 40 tons at Bft per minute, 25 tons at 12ft per minute, and 15 tons at 24ft per minute#

It is expected that the vessel will leave for Wellington in August of next year.
