STRONGER DEFENCES
AMERICA’S PACIFIC COAST NEW NAVAL BASE WANTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received July 21, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 20. Senator Hale, chairman of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee, has informed President Coolidge that the United States needs enlarged facilities for the defence of the nation from the Pacific Coast side. After explaining the results of the recent survey of the coast naval facilities. he said a first-class naval base along the Pacific Coast was necessary. He recommended the deepening of tne channel entrance to Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, which is regarded _as the key to America’s naval operations in the Pacific.
