The committee of the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the girls’ branch of the Navy League are arranging to collect and send flowers to the ships of the American fleet on their arrival. As flowers are as a slogan to our American friends this welcome should he a pleasing one. The committee of the district nursing guild of St. John, through their president, Mrs Balcombe Brown, have sent grateful thanks to the trustees of the T. G. Macarthv estate for a handsome donation of £l5O to their funds, expenses in connection with the work of the district nurses among the sick poor being so much higher than when the guild was established. Despite counter-attractions, there was an attendance of some 125 couples at the' Hunt ball held in the Empire Hall tuiys the “Mnhawatu Standard”). Both the main hall and the supper room were attractively decornted with greenery, tree fern fronds predominating, while delightfully arranged lounges added to the comfort, of loose present. Overhead were artistically draped coloured streamers which afforded a pleasing relief. Orchestral music by a competent band of musicians and an excellently conditioned floor combined xo afford the maximum of pleasure from one of the leading social events of the district. The general arrangements reflected credit on the secretary (Mr W. McKenzie) and the ladies’ committee. Tho Al.C.’s were Messrs L. H. Collinson, A. Balm! er, H. R. Lancaster, D. M, McFaven, W. G. Shannon, J; Shaw,' W. Scott, and T. It. Taylor. Extras were played by Miss Flora Mackenzie and by Messrs H. Spenoer and Allan Scott. The hall was made the occasion for the debut of Misses F. Molnnes, A. Turner. G. Taylor, and M. Linklater. AN ENJOYABLE DANCE

The Art Gallery, Whitmore street, Was the scene of an enjoyable dance last Friday evening, the occasion be, ing the first staff dance of the Goldberg Advertising Agency Ltd. About 150 guests, including Mr and Mrs Frank Goldberg, made merry te the splendid music of Manuel Hyman's Royal Club Orchestra, and the committee is to be congratulated on the marked success attending their efforts. The hostesses were Meed am es F. Goldberg, A. D. Paisliey, V. N. Beasley, H. Levy, and O. Hi. Proctor, and tho committee comprised Misses McNair, Jones and Smith, Messrs Proctor.
