ANNUAL COLLEGE GAME

WHO WILL REFEREE? REQUEST BY COLLEGES TURNED At the meeting of the Referees’ Association last night, a request was made from the authorities of Wellington and St. Patrick's colleges that Air A. E. Neilson be appointed to control the annual match between the 1 two schools. Mr A. W. O. Travers moved that Mr Neilson be given the match, and Mr Wakefield seconded the motion. Mr W. J. Carson moved an amendment that the college authorities he advised that the appointment be left in the hands of the Appointment Board. Last year the match was controlled by a .junior referee, and he thought it was a game that could be controlled by a junior member of the association. A JUNIOR’S CHANCE Air J. Moffitt, who seconded the amendment, said that he had always been opposed to senior referees taking this match, as it was a match that could be controlled by many of the junior referees of to-day. It was one of the game sthat the junior referees strove to get in order to prove their ability to take senior games later on. They should point out to the college authorities that the Appointment Board were the best judges, and it would be nothing more than a vote of no-confidence if they failed to carry the amendment. Air J. Francis said that it was a straight-out agreement. There was only one name mentioned. We can’t accept the letter. Air D. Caleinai: I don’t think the letter is trying to force the appointment of a referee. It is only a suggestion. A voice: It is a direct insult to the Appointment Board. Mr E. 8. Wylton: I think we ought to point out the position. They don’t appear to know our rules. Voices: They do.: Air Hylton: This is one of the cleanest games ever seen on the park, and I think it can quite easily be controlled by a junior referee. Air T. A. Fletcher (the chairman) said that they were not antagonistic to Air Neilson, who was fit nnd competent to take the game, but they must keep to their rules. The amendment was carried.
