SOCIAL SERVICE CLUB
STUDENTS SPLENDID MORE
The work of visiting those patients Ponrua Mental Hospital who .have no friends, ho relatives, and who possess no estate, is being continued by members of the Victoria University College bociai Service Club, visits having been paid regularly each Saturday afternoon since the inception of the club in July of last The organiser desires to thank th© wholesale fruiterers and a number of the retail fruiterers who have very kindly continued to supply the club with fruit for distribution at the hospital, notably Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., Messrs A. G. Wallace and Co., Messrs Leary and Co.. Ltd., Messrs Grav Bros., Messns W. M. Bolt and Cot, and Nelson Fruit Growers' Company. In addition to the work of visiting adult patients, the club has recently, on several Saturday afternoon?, taken a number of the children, who are inmates of the hospital, for motor drives. Thera are a number of very young children in the institution* and it requires little imagination to realise how these unfortunate children appreciate the pleasure of even a short motor drive. It ia desired to continue this practice each Saturday afternoon, but a continuance of this work depends wholly on *he generosity of motor firms and private motor-car owners. The club is particularly indebted already to various people who have givep their assistance in this direction particularly the ABC Garage, Messrs Magnus Motors, Ltd.. Messrs Adams, Ltd., Messrs Crossley Cars. Ltd., Messrs J. Dunn, C. A. Batt, B. Smith, E. B. Borbarn, Inkersell, L. Tattle, —. Cleary, L. Dew, McNair, Petlierick. and Dominion Motors, Ltd.
The work of the club, however, is continuous, and the motorists whe have already assisted the club cannot be expected to (to more than take a share m turn with others, and it is desired, therefore, to make an appeal to private cor owners who are willing to lend the use of a car on an occasional Saturday, perhaps once in every three months. It should be realised that the work which is being performed is work which, every citizen with human sympathies should do everything to encourage. Much is being said nowadays concerning movements of youth, and more is being said about the necessity for sacrifice as opposed ,to selfishness. This effort combines both these factors, but its success will depend largely on the support and encouragement which is given to it by other generously disposed persons. Tt i>-, therefore, very’little to ask that motorcar owners should giv© the effort this small assistance. Car owners who are prepared to do this are asked to communicate with the secretary and organiser, Mr ,T. W. Davidson/nt Victoria University College, when further information will he supplied.
