TRADE AGREEMENT

AUSTRALIA AND CANADA.

TARIFF CHANGES NEEDED.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.

(Received April 17, 5.5 p.m.), OTTAWA, April 16. Mr Mackenzie King, Prime Ministe' of Canada,, stated m the House o) Commons that he understood the Australian tariff would be changed in certain particulars, and that the pending agreement might necessitate similar changes in tho Canadian tariff. He believed that action had already been taken by Australia, but in Canada the matter was still one for negotiation.

The Prime Minister’s statement is taken to mean that the Australian Government so far has not agreed to any alteration of the provisos in the prospective agreement which define tho percentage of Canadian labour and materials which must enter into any product before it can secure preference in Australia, and that the Canadian Government still is desirous of securing alterations in those provisos which fix the preference received by Austin lian fruits in Canada, in order ta placate the opposition of the Western farmers, and or the Progressive Party, which fears an increase in the cost of living.
