ABOVE THE SNOW LINE

EXPERIENCES AT EGMONT. A pai'ty of twelve Master-ton residents (ten ladies and two men) visited Mount Egmont during Easter and had some trying experiences during their climb (says a Wairarapa paper). Setting out on Saturday morning in a misty rain, the party attempted to reach the Accommodation House on the other side of the mountain. After reaching 2000 feet above the hostel half of the party returned, while the other half marched on. Heavy rain fell, , and two of the party lost their Way, the one lot arriving after five hours’ tramp, while the others, who had lost their way, became faint, aud arrived two hours later. They were so drenohed that a change of clothing was necessary, and only men’s appareTwas available. To add to their troubles they arrived only to find that all their money had been taken back by the party who returne»-*ialf-way through. An S.O.S. was received at the North Egmont Hostel for two motor-cars to go to the Dawson Falls' Hostel (fifty miles distant) to convey the drenched trampers home. They looked a sorry sight in their improvised clothing on arrival homo at 8 p.m., just 12 hours after starting out. Severul, others during the week-end had similar experiences, some of which caused much anxiety until the guides went out and found them late at night.
