BIRDWOOD PROMOTES
CHIEF COMMAND IN INDIA. RANK OF FIELD-MARSHAL. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. March 20. It is reported that General Sir William Bird wood has been appointed Commaiider-in-Cbief in India, and nlo promoted to the rank of Field-Mar&lial. General Birdwood has had a lons military experience in India. In 1593 he was adjutant of the Viceroy’s bodyguard; in 1904- he was military secretary to Lord Kitchener, then Com-mander-in-Chief; in 1909 he commanded a brigade on the North-West Frontier; in 1912 lie became QuartermcstcrGenerai i n India; and in 1912-14 was Secretary to the Government of India in the Army Department. During the war he commanded the Australian Imperial Force, and in 1920 was in Australia as Commander of the Commonwealth Military Forces. For the past four 3*eai*s he has been 1.C.C., Northern Army in India.
