NEWCASTLE CHAMPION BAND

TOWN HAUi NEXT MONDAY. Considerable interest ia being evinced in musical and general circles here with the. coming of . the victorious Newcastle Steel Works Band, en route to Sydney, after a brief tour here. The season starts with per ' forraances at the Town : Hall on Monday and Tuesday, and then continued in the Tivoli Theatre on Wednesday and following nights. ' The wonderful achievements of the Newcastle Band in England last .year created a considerable stir in 'band circles throughout the world, for never before hud two out of three of the coveted British Band championships been won by . an individual organisation,- so that the Australian Band’s leap into iairie was well merited'. Mr A. H. .Baile, the notable conductor of the. visiting band, is primarily responsible for the band’s meteoric. success abroad, his artistic arid unobstrusiv 3 methods were highly eulogised by English critics. The opening, program tie at the Town Hall on Monday night contains a rare assortment of gems from the hand’s extensive repertoire, loading 'terns are “Liszt’s Works,” as arranged by Dr. ICeighlev, one cf the adjudicators at tho Bellevue championship contest in England last year, when the Newcastle Band was. victorious, this fine contest number includes the 6th rhapsody.. The military setting of the “William Tell” overture, Tschaikowsky’s works, “In a Poraian Market, “Honest Toil” march and “Toowoomba,” an Australian fox trot,- with Rimmer’s “Musical ‘ Fragments,” are all happily contrasting numbers. The soloists are Mr Arthur Stendor, who has played here previously as a cornet virtuoso. Mr Steuder has selected Percy Oode’o “Zelda,” and Mr Obas. Dean in lighter vein contributes t “The Laughing Trombone.” The box ■ plans ' for. Monday and Tuesday are at the Bristol, where also the plans for the Tivoli Theatre season next week open next Monday.
