MOTOR-CAR “JACK’

A NOVEL AFFAIR. A novel motor-car jack was recently tested in London by the Royal Automobile dub. The jack is operated bymeans of a “sparklet” bulb on a piston. When the cap in bulb is punctured it releases gas that almost immediately raises the car off the grnuua In the test a heavy car weighing approximately 41cwt, with 19cwt on the front- axle and 22cwt on the rear, was selected for demonstration. Starting with a deflated front, tyre, the car was raised in 4 2-oscc, plus I7sec for assembling and placing; a second test took 3sec and 26eec respectively, the lift being sJin in eacih case. With a deflated rear tyre, the times were 4sec and 25sec, and 4 3-ssec and 16sec for two tests. The shortest time for lowering was 3sec, and for dismantling and placing a new bulb 35sec. After the car had been left for 16} hours on the jack the axle was found to be at the same height. The jack weighs about 81b, and if marketed at a reasonable figure in this country should find a readv sale, for the average motorist dislikes the work usually associated with jacking a heavy car some six or seven inches off the ground.
