THE LIBERAL CAMPAIGN
The Parliamentary Liberal Party is doing the right thing in starting its election campaign early. And it is doing it in the right way, by putting organised energy into its work. Its “raison d’etre” is Liberalism. Its business is to carry the Liberal flag to the polls of the general election, to be held some time in the current year. Its object is to show fhat Liberal principles are undying and uncompromising, and, so showing, to make them prevail in the Parliamentary election. One of its rival parties, have begun their camcampaign. The. Labour Party has been in the field some time organising its forces and selecting its candidates. The Reform'Party is not making the same parade as Labour, but it would be a mistake to regard it as sleeping. It is enough to remember that in the past the hour of general election has always found them not only broad awake hut fully organised. It is well, therefore, that the party carrying the Liberal flag has begun work in energetic earnest. Their number at present in Parliament has dwindled, for reasons that are obvious. But they enjoy one great outstanding advantage. They are not sectional in their objective. They are against 1 government by any section. This gives them a wide appeal on the basis of Liberal principles, which aim primarily at the general good. The achievements of Liberalism, are to them a great support. The setback of Liberalism is a warning that the world does not live in the past, but lives in the present, and. for the future on the lessons of the past. The lesson of the Liheral setback urges the vital need for the strongest co-operation in all matters affecting the general welfare, which can only he secured by justice to every section of the community. If the Parliamentary Liberals take to heart this great lesson of the past, they will make the organisation they are now perfecting overwhelming in its power.
