THE INEVITABLE HOARDING. COUNCIL PROTECTS HUTT ROAD. “It is a terrible thing if the Railway Department is going to allow the whole of one side of the Hutt road to be covered with posters,” said the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), at last night’s council meeting. “Why, people will not he able to see the harbour. It-will spoil the beauty of the place altogether.” The remark was called forth by a recommendation of the finance committee “that no advertisement* he permitted on the concrete wall at the junction of the Onslow and Huft roads.” “It may he very interesting for visitors to Wellington to come along the Hutt road and read injunctions to drink somebody’s gin, visit certain picture shows, or use certain corn cures,’" said Councillor C. H. Chapman. “But surely if we have any right we have the right of refusing. And if the Railway Department is determined to make revenue this way, we cannot very well stop them. The only thing that might stop them is public opinion. But I think that the council should stand against it.” A motion to amend the motion to read “that no advertisements be permitted for The present” was carried by 7 votes to T.
