The abattoir committee, in their report to the City Council last evening, stated that the reason for the decrease in stock slaughtered at the municipal abattoir was that certain freezing companies outside the Wellington district were supplying the butchers of Wellington with b considerable amount of meat for which the council was receiving no fees. The. Master Butchers’ Association had been asked to inform their members that abattoir fees must be paid on all such meat received; also that it was necessary for tho butchers to forward ‘to the abattoirs manager each week a complete return of such meat received. The, city, solicitor also had notified, the butchers concerned that the fees must he paid i|nd the returns furnished. Up ,to the. present the majority of butphers .had failed to comply with instructions given, and thereby had committed an offence against section 33 of the abattoir by-law. The committee recommended, and the council decided, that notice should he published- through the press to the effect that all butchers who failed to complv with this section of the abattoir by-law.' after a given, date, wduld he proceeded against, and that a-r----thoritv should, also be granted to the citv solicitor to take such action as h* considered necessary.
