BORAH & ADMINISTRATION SENATOR AND PRESIDENT BREAK OVER PARIS AGREEMENT. ‘‘DANGEROUS STEP.” By T olograph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, January 19. The biggest ' political sensation for some time developed with the announcement that Senator Borah, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is breaking with the Administration, regarding the financial agreement signed in Paris last week. “It is a dangerous step, which may entangle America in Europe, and make this Government morally, if not legally, responsible as a partner with the Adlied Powers in enforcing reparations payments against Germany,” eaid Senator Borah,' reviewing the situation. ... A SECOND DODGE. Senator Borah’s step is reminiscent of the late Senator Dodge’s revolt against President Wilson, which nullified the Deague of Nations. Senator Borah’s influence has grown greatly sinoe he succeeded Dodge,_ and he has been quite frank in declaring his opposition to the policy towards the Soviet! There are many signs that Borah’s revolt will embarrass the Administration. V “ATROCIOUS.” Colonel George Harvey, former Ambassador in Britain, writing a Sunday editorial, asserts that .the agreement is atrocious. He says that America is waiving her independence in European affairs. “If Germany defaults and the Allies attempt to collect hy force, then we are in for it,” he says. The White House spokesman has already denied that any new obligation exists, and insists that America is undertaking no new responsibilities. HUGHES ACTS SENATE’S POWERS DENIED. (Sydney "Sun” Cable.) WASHINGTON, January 19. To prevent the Borah Party in the Senate doing to the Paris agreement what- Senator Dodge, did .to the League of Nations Protocol, the Secretary of .State, Mr C. E. Hughes, has issued an official statement denying that the Senate has jurisdiction in the matter. This means that the Administration is trying to nip the Borah insurrection before it gets An impetus.
