THE BIG ART UNION

OTAGO’S GREAT EFFORT, A FEW SIDELIGHTS. A “Star” reporter had a few minutes’ conversation with Major Lampen, who was organising secretary of the big art union, and who has naturally a number or very interesting experiences to relate. It was only to be expected in such a big affair as this that there should bo a number of extraordinary incidents. Major Lampen gave one instance of how a doctor in the Wellington district had thrown away, a ohance of gaining two substantial prizes. A book of tickets was forwarded to him, but tho medico promptly and injudiciously returned it. It was later discovered that it contained two lucky numbers. Thirteen is always regarded as unlucky, but Major Lampen, who has plenty of experience to back him up, avers that this is not so. As evidence of this ho points out the fact that the business man who actually sold the ticket that won the £IOOO prize had had a number of books to dispose of, and it was from the thirteenth .that the winning ticket was taken.

In explanation of the numbers and letters that appeared on the tickets, Major Lampen stated that there were three series—A, B, and C. The A series was confined to the north of tho North Island, B to the South Island, and those lettered 0 were disposed of out of and all over the Dominion. As can he seen from the following table tile first six prizes were evenly distributed: First, prize Dunedin Second prize Auckland Third prize Taranaki Fourth prize Seacliff Fifth prize, Enfield, N. Otago Sixth prize Marlborough
