The declaration by the shipowners that their fleets might he laid up unless the seamen complied with the awards of the Arbitration Court has had no effect upon the men. It is stated that the union officials have no intention of lifting the 'ban on the inter-State ships till the overtime claims are paid unconditionally. Owing to the non-fulfilment of the Melbourne "agreement by the wharf labourers, it is possible that the shipowners may reconsider the settlement. The opinion is expressed in union circles that the shipowners’ declaration is mere bluff. Union officials stated that they were unable to say what the next development would be. They regard the situation as one out of which anything might arise., Owing to a dispute about wages the crews of the steamers Oorama and Baldina have been paid off' at Newcastle, and the vessels are laid up.
