The declaration by the shipowners that their fleets might he laid up unless the seamen complied with the awards of the Arbitration Court has had no effect upon the men. It is stated that the union officials have no intention of lifting the 'ban on the inter-State ships till the overtime claims are paid unconditionally. Owing to the non-fulfilment of the Melbourne "agreement by the wharf labourers, it is possible that the shipowners may reconsider the settlement. The opinion is expressed in union circles that the shipowners’ declaration is mere bluff. Union officials stated that they were unable to say what the next development would be. They regard the situation as one out of which anything might arise., Owing to a dispute about wages the crews of the steamers Oorama and Baldina have been paid off' at Newcastle, and the vessels are laid up. DISPUTE AT BRISBANE SEAMEN TAKEN TO GAOL. Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright BRISBANE, Deceinher 24. Trouble has arisen with the crew of the White Star liner Zealandic. The crew made certain demands with which the master of the vessel refused to comply, and 50 dissatisfied seamen left the vessel iu a body. Warrants were issued for their arrest on a charge of being absent without leave, and the men were conveyed to the polioe station. AGREEMENT REACHED. Forbv members of the crew of the Zealandic were charged at the Polioe Court with being absent from the ship without leave. After evidence had been heard the parties conferred and arrived at am agreement. The master then withdrew the charge, and the men returned to the snip.
