FORESHORE RIGHTS

A VIGOROUS PROTEST. At the meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board last nigfit, Mr M. W. Welch asked who controlled the foreshore a,t Breaker Bay? The chairman replied that the Harbour Board controlled it up to the high water mark. Mr Welch said he understood the foreshore at Breaker Bay belonged to a private individual. How did they got that right ? The chairman: They bought it. Mr Welch: Do you mean to say that an individual can buy foreshore rights? It is a case we should fight, even if we go to the Privy Council. Thousands of pounds are being taken away from there. The chairman: We have no rights above high water mark unless vested in us, and if we are going to fight tho Crown’s battles it w going to bo a costly job. I would rather give it to the widows. We will look after our rights up to high, water mark, taken.
