With the rapid development of the oilengined vessel, a new situation hap arisen in shipping. It is pointed out in this month’s Motor Ship” that motor vessels of nearly 1,000,000 tops gross are now being built. In the last Quarter mere ships than steamers were commenced. and during the last 18 months motor ships under construction have increased threefold, whilst steamers have decreased by nearly BO per cent. A year ago motor ships represented 24 per cent, of the eteanj tonnage on the stocks. To-day it IS 38 per cept. For the first time In history there is a larger motor than steam tonnage being biult in Continental yards, and ip countries ether than our own the percentage of motor to steam tonnage Under construction has increased , “rom 23.5 to 102 within a period of one yearIt is significant that Germany, ip building up her new mercantile marine,' is adopting the oil anfflne almost exclusively. Carman steam tonnage under con"struotion is less than 10 per cent, of British, but the motor tonnage is ever )0 per omit. It ia obvious, therefore, that Germany is attacking the British motor shipbuilding industry with all its energy, a fact that should net be ignored either by shipbuilders or shipowners.
