SAMBO’S MISTAKE
STORY OF CAPTIVE WOMEN MISSIONARIES WITH CHILD VISIT THE NATIVES. REPORTS UNFOUNDED. Bv Telejrraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 14. Senator Pearce says he is satisfied that the reports that two white women are heldl captive by blacks in the Gulf of Carpentaria Territory have been proved to be untrue. As far as he can see at present no further action is necessary, although he is waiting for a full report from the Huddersfield expedition. All the reports seem to have originated from Dr Wade’s blackboy, Sambo. The theory is that the reports originated from the presence in the district of two lady missionaries, one of whom had with her a half-caste child, for whom she was caring. They had visited' the aboriginals’ camps, and probably the natives’ attempts to tell of the white women’s visits gave rise to the alarming reports.
