OUTRAGE IN BURMA
ATTACK ON SIGHT-SEERS. AMERICANS INJURED. (Sydney “Sun” Cable.) DELHI, October 18. Sir Harcourt Butler, Governor of Burma, has offered a rewaid of 5000 rupees for information leading to the conviction of persons responsible for a savage attack on an American missionary, Mr Gleeson, and his wife, a few days ago. The attack which was made in broad daylight by a hand of Buddhist priests near . the monastery, while the pair was sightseeing, is thought in responsible quarters to he due to violent fanatical hatred of white people on the part of the priests. This hatred 1 has been evident for some time. It is evident that religious feeling was not the motive, as a few hours later two British soldiers were attacked, and one was injured by a sword cut on -the head.
The military and civil police to-day raided the monastery and arrested a number of monks, and one layman. The Americans are progressing favourably.
