FAREWELL TO MELBA
GALA DAY IN MELBOURNE. A GREAT AUSTRALIAN. Bv Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. (Received October 14, 10.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 14. Dame Nellie Melba bade farewell to the operatic stage at a gala performance of “La Boheme” in TTis Majesty’s Theatre, which was packed by a demonstrative gathering. Speeches were delivered by Mr Stanley Bruce, Prime Minister of Australia, and Mr Walter Brunton, Lord Mayor of Melbourne, who eulogised the diva’s magnificent stage record and her services to Australia. Dame Melba was deeply affected, and concluded her thanks with “God bless you all.” The ceremony ended when the Lord Mayor handed her a cheque for £IB,OOO, the result of her appeal on behalf of limbless soldiers.
By a' coincidence, Daime Melba made her debut almost exactly 37 years ago. Silo appeared at the Theatre de la Monnaie, Brussels, on October 15th, 1887, as Gilda in “Rigoletto.”
